Safety Guide When Using An Outdoor Gantry Crane

Outdoor gantry cranes are widely used in the construction industry as it has been proven to be an effective machine that efficiently handles various materials in different industries. In general, outdoor gantry cranes should only be operated by a qualified operator – mainly for safety purposes. Not just the safety of the operator, but also the other staff and people working in the said area. To make sure that an outdoor gantry crane is operated properly and safely, here are some safety operating tips that are applicable for both new and experienced operators:

Check Before Using

No matter how long you’ve been in the industry, never skip the inspection before operating the machine. This includes carefully inspecting the mechanic and even the electric safety of the said device. This initial inspection will also help you determine if the brakes, bells, limit switch or emergency switches have problems. If one or more of these parts are broken, do not attempt to operate the said crane and the operation must be stopped immediately.

Always Follow The Signals

During the operation of the outdoor gantry crane, always make sure that you’re following signals. When you’re being asked to stop, you stop regardless. With that being said, the operation of the said crane should be operated only with the go signal – and before the operation, make sure that you ring the bell first.

Additionally, when two cranes are being operated together, always follow the signals so both cranes will move as one.

Be Aware Of Your Surroundings

If the outdoor gantry crane’s trolley or hook position is about to approach its limit position, make sure that you should set the speed and slow it down. If you need to use the brake, use it – because using the reverse can’t be used as an alternate way of slowing it down.

When the crane is not operating, the goods shouldn’t be left hanging in the air. With that being said, if any goods or people are about to approach the ground, it is your responsibility to make sure that you alert the people and use the bell first. You cannot move any goods when there are people on the ground, and when moving goods, they should be near the ground level and the goods shouldn’t be high.

Remember, people aren’t allowed to cross the ground when the cranes are being moved.

When The Gantry Crane Is Not Being Operated

Once done using the crane equipment, it is important that you park it in the allocated space. Turn off the power switch and even put up signs that unauthorized persons cannot operate the said machine. If possible, put around fences and hang up a No Entry sign to avoid unauthorized and unsafe use of the said crane.

During power outages, the outdoor gantry crane’s panel must be set to “0”.

Take Note Of The Weight Limit

When reaching heavy goods, try and lift it slightly off the ground to see if the crane can steadily move the goods from one place to another. Don’t forget to check the brakes when doing so. If successful, continue to lift it up at a slow pace.

The use of an outdoor gantry crane offers numerous benefits, but at the same time, should be used with safety and precaution. Following the said tips above will help you get those tasks done minimizing accidents in the workplace.
